Cigar Academy: Analyzing Cigars

Have you ever tasted the following in a cigar: marshmallow, marzipan, orange peel, pencil lead or toffee? If so, you either: 1) have an incredibly discriminating palate, or, 2) you need to hit yourself in the head with a brick and go sit in the corner. All of those descriptors have shown up in reviews […]

Cigar Academy: Random Cigar Facts

I was thinking about a number of things about cigars, and a whole flood of facts popped into my head, so I figured that I would share some of them with you. Did you ever wonder why two cigars of the same size smoke for different amounts of time? Certainly one answer is that one […]

New Pipe and Cigar Smoking Product Ideas

We here at PipesandCigars.com deal with thousands of products every day. As I think about all the items that pass through here, I have one recurring thought – “Why didn’t I invent (fill in a product name here)?  I’d be rich by now.”  So, I’m going to let you know about some of the ideas that I have […]

The impact of the tongue’s taste zones on smoking a pipe or cigar

Since I have some time on my hands, and like my literary hero, Sherlock Holmes, I abhor mental stagnation, I tend to think of concepts related to smoking, and after re-reading a piece of literature, something struck me- since our tongues have “zones” for taste sensations, what direct impact does this have on the enjoyment […]

Cigar Academy: Cigar Etiquette

Ask anyone who knows me and they will tell you that I shouldn’t be seen in polite company. In my mind, salad forks are used when you run out of regular forks. I always thought that Emily Post was a deep NFL pass pattern. So it would probably come as a shock that I would […]

Do you remember your first time? I do.

I was 18 and my then girlfriend and I had talked about it for a while. We decided it was cool to go for it. She had surprised me at work one day, by going down to the pharmacy and getting me a 3 pack. I was nervous but excited, and of course we did not want our parents to know. Cigar Academy: How to Re-Light a Cigar

Having to relight a cigar after it goes out can be a make or break moment. Typically if a cigar is left to go out, it is a great idea to pass on it and let it die with dignity. Sometimes you just can’t let it go however; it is just that damn good. When that is the case there is a proper way to do it to get the most out of your experience.

Pipe and Cigar Trends

There are trends in just about every arena. If a new and innovative show crops up on TV, you know it won’t be long before a half-dozen “clones” make their way to the small screen. If a wine critic writes glowingly about a dry red wine made with anchovies, by the time the review hits […]

Make Your Next Cigar More Enjoyable

The last column I wrote on this subject was about how to cut and light your cigar, and, when done properly, those things can definitely enhance your enjoyment. This time, I’d like to address something that will direct affect the cigar smoking experience, and that is what to drink while savoring your favorite stick. I’ve […]
