I have waited very impatiently for the new samples to arrive. I have fond memories of Dark Strong and enjoyed every tin that I smoked, which was quite a few. The last time I smoked a tin was right before it was discontinued. I purchased a tin and smoked it non-stop until it was gone. Then the news came that it was being discontinued and I thought it would still be available for a little while. I was very wrong and almost as soon as the news was announced Dark Strong seemed to disappear from the shelves. Since I just got through smoking a tin I was not too disappointed. I had my fill of Dark Strong and moved on. But as the years went by I started to miss the tobacco. The flakes are beautiful and there is a unique sweetness, almost a sweet molasses that I loved.
Well, yesterday the samples arrived and Russ was the first to pack a bowl. The smell of his pipe was the smell I remembered and it smelled exactly like the old Dark Strong. The flakes were identical and I was getting very excited. Eric smoked a bowl and again it smelled right. I, unfortunately was not able to smoke a bowl because I was testing a few new aromatics that had to be approved by the end of the day. I think Eric was trying to punish me, he said no Dark Strong until I smoked the four aromatics, I had been putting off testing the blends for a few days They were all good, but my tongue was fried by the end of the day. So this morning I took my trusty Icarus pipe and gave it a thorough cleaning. I carefully packed my pipe with those beautiful flakes and as soon as I lit my pipe I knew this was the same Dark Strong that I remembered. That sweet molasses is there and the flakes burned nice and cool. I am coming to the end of the bowl and I already have a few flakes on my desk for another bowl. This is another blend I am going to stock in my cellar so I can enjoy it for years to come.
